Álvaro Uribe is currently Colombia's rightwing president---under his administration, countless human rights violations and atrocities have been committed and continue to be committed as we speak.
WE PROTEST Uribe's presence in New York because we are sick of these violations on our loved ones, on los campesinos, on the indigenous, on the Afro-Colombian populations, on women, on the LGBTQ communities, and those who are fighting for a more just Colombia.
WE PROTEST because we have an obligation to honor the struggle of these people, many of which are victims of a conflict that has lasted too long...
WE PROTEST because we are concerned for the livelihoods of our families and compañeros who are living day to day in Colombia or we know someone who is affected by the conflict...
WE PROTEST because we love justicia, paz, y la vida....
WE PROTEST because in New York City, rightwing human rights violators are NOT WELCOME!!!

In case you are not familiar with Uribe's policies, please look over the following information:
DID YOU KNOW in the 12-month period ending in June 2008, more than 1,515 civilians were killed in the conflict in Colombia, under Uribe's administration?
...........that more than 200 people were the victim of enforced disappearance during the 12-month period ending in June 200?
..........that paramilitary groups remained active, despite claims by the government that all paramilitaries had demobilized in a government-sponsored process that began in 2003, and that they continue to kill civilians and to commit other human rights violations, sometimes with the support or acquiescence of the security forces?
.........that some 461 killings were attributed to paramilitaries in the 12-month period ending in June 2008, compared to 233 in the previous 12-month period?
......that around 70 members of Congress, some of which are in Uribe's party and close friends and family, are still being investigated for alleged links to paramilitary groups?
DID YOU KNOW that out of every 5 trade unionists murdered worldwide, over 3 are Colombian, making it the highest percentage in the world?
DID YOU KNOW that nearly 500 trade unionists have been murdered there since he took office in 2002?
.............that in 97 per cent of cases, no-one has been convicted over the killings?
DID YOU KNOW that, as governor, Uribe promoted the paramilitary organization, CONVIVIR, that went on a bloody rampage and massacred unarmed civilians?
.......that CONVIVIR later joined the Self-Defense Forces of Columbia, or the AUC, which the U.S. State Department classifies as a "terrorist organization"?
DID YOU KNOW that it is widely agreed that Plan Colombia as a drug war policy is a disaster and has only contributed to more violence and instability in the region?
........that under this plan, the Monsanto corporation has sprayed tons of Roundup and Roundup Ultra during the 24-year-long drug war in Colombia, which have had disastrous affects on people living in the countryside, including poisoning of water, health defects, and consequently, deaths?
DID YOU KNOW that under his administration the infamously violent Blackwater Colombian subsidiary, ID Systems, ran into a storm of criticism when it recruited 20 ex-military officers for the company's Iraq operations?
DID YOU KNOW that the multinational corporation, under Uribe's administration, Chiquita Banana, admitted to paying $1 million dollars to paramilitary terrorist groups?
DID YOU KNOW that his administration's policies on the development of biofuels has drastically increased land displacement and murders of campesinos, Afro-Colombian and indigenous populations?

Álvaro Uribe es el actual presidente derechista de Colombia—bajo su administración, se han cometido, y aún se siguen cometiendo, innumerables atrocidades y violaciones de derechos humanos.
NOSOTROS PROTESTAMOS la presencia de Uribe en Nueva York porque estámos hartos de estas violaciones de nuestros seres queridos, de los campesinos, de los indígenas, de las pueblos afro-colombianas, de las mujeres, de las comunidades homosexuales, y de los que luchan por una Colombia más justa.
PROTESTAMOS porque tenemos la obligación de honorar la lucha de esta gente, muchos de los cuales son víctimas de un conflicto que ha durado demasiado tiempo...
PROTESTAMOS porque nos preocupamos por el bienestar de nuestras familias y compañeros que viven a diario la situación colombiana o porque conocemos a alguién que es afectado por el conflicto...
PROTESTAMOS porque amamos la justicia, la paz, y la vida....

Por si no estás familiarizado con las políticas de Uribe, por favor lee lo siguiente:
¿SABÍAS que en los 12 meses antes de Junio del 2008, más de 1,515 ciudadanos fueron matados en el conflicto colombiano; todo bajo la administracíon de Uribe?
...........¿que más de 200 personas fueron víctimas de la “desaparición” forzada durante el año terminando Junio del 2008?
..........¿que grupos paramilitares aún se mantienen activos, a pesar de declaraciones del gobierno que todos los paramilitares se han desmovilizado en un proceso patrocinado por el gobierno que empezó en el 2003, y que continúan matando ciudadanos y cometiendo otras violaciones de derechos humanos, a veces con el apoyo directo o el consentimiento de las fuerzas de seguridad?
........¿que unas 461 matanzas fueron atribuídas a los paramilitares en el año terminando Junio del 2008, comparado con 233 en el año anterior?
......¿que casi 70 congresistas, algunos de los cuales están en el partido de Uribe o en su familia o grupo de amigos, aún estan siendo interrogados por nexos con grupos paramilitares?
¿SABÍAS que de cada cinco sindicalistas asesinados en el mundo, más de 3 son colombianos, que lo hace el porcentaje más alto del mundo?
¿SABÍAS que se han asesinado aproximadamente 500 sindicalistas desde que Uribe comenzó su mandato en el 2002?
.......¿que en el 97 por ciento de los casos, nadie se ha condenado por estos crimenes?
¿SABÍAS que, como gobernador de Antioquia, Uribe creó una organización paramilitar, conocida como CONVIVIR, que después masacró ciudadanos desarmados?
.......¿que las CONVIVIR luego se unieron a las AUC, Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia, classificada por los Estados Unidos como una "organización terrorista"?
¿SABÍAS que es opiníon común que el Plan Colombia, como política de la guerra contra el narcotráfico, es un desastre y sólo ha contribuido a más violencia e instabilidad en la región?
........¿que bajo este plan, la corporación Monsanto ha fumigado con toneladas de Roundup y Roundup Ultra (glifosato) en Colombia como parte de la guerra contra el narcotráfico que ha durado 24 años. Esto ha afectado negativamente a los campesinos colombianos, debido al envenenamiento del agua, problemas de salud, y por consecuencia, muertes?

WASHINGTON - Motorists and pedestrians have probably noticed giant heart sculptures on DC streets. The larger than life hearts seem to have popped up out of nowhere. They are part of a public relations campaign by Colombia to try to get Americans to change their perceptions of that country.
