Enjambre en Sa'th Tama Kiwe (primera parte) - Swarm in Sa'th Tama Kiwe (part one)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This month we Bees have formed a small swarm and has been flying around distinct parts of southwestern Colombia. The first stop on this pollinations tour is Sa'th Tama Kiwe, or the "sacred land of tama", that today is the municipality of Caldono, Cauca. The first landing on this flight was the Resguardo Ancestral Nasa of Pueblo Nuevo. During our visit in Pueblo Nuevo we were mainly with the students and teachers from the schools in the community as well as meet and share with other people from area.

The first day we arrived early at the Alvaro Ulcué Chocué School to share the Plan Colombia banner with the students and their teachers. We had a large group of about 80 ants from different grade levels. Everyone took turns coming up to the cloth baner to get a better look throughout the story telling and many shared examples based on their daily lives. While most students were very timid, some shared what they new about transnacional companies and their natural resource interests in indigenous territorios. One of them shared: "I think it is very bad seeing these large oil companies in foreign territories ang causing massive contamination of the environment." Afterwards the students showed us their productive projects like the corn crop in the tul (garden) and the egg laying chickens that contribute to help cover the school’s costs.

The following days we shared the banner story telling with the students and teachers at the other school in the Resguardo, the Centro de Formación Integral Comunitario Luís Ángel Monroy CEFIC that is from the Programa de Educación Bilingüe e Intercultural PEBI of the Consejo Regional Indígena del Cauca CRIC. To understand more about the CEFIC an ant must understand Kwe'sx Uma Kiwe, the Plan of Life and Platform of Community Development that is the base in the construction of the culture, education and the political formation in the communities and the indigenous processes in the Cauca. The CEFIC is where the PEBI applies and develops its ideas and pedagogical proposals. For us, Bees organized in form of a collective that just has a couple of years in swarm and attempting to promote other pedagogical methods and materials for the processes of distinct communities, we were excited to see that aspects of education that we value such as participation, inter culturalism, self guided leearning and the strengthening of political and cultural processes, are aspects that are considered within Kwe'sx Uma Kiwe.

The CEFIC was founded in 1986 as the CEFILAM, an educational center that trained youth to be the future teachers of the resguardos, creators of investigation strategies and in the comprehension of local problematic. One of the occurrences most remember was in 1991 with the demobilization of the Movimiento Armado Manuel Quintín Lame in the Center that later on helped play a role in the teaching and forming of the demobilized youths. Today it is a school for the youth from the Resguardo de Pueblo Nuevo and youths from other communities of other parts of the southwest that stay at the school. The school has a cabildo escolar, a semblance of the communities and is divided in 3 years, 5 levels and 3 stages; fundamentals, confrontation, and security with an emphasis in the proposal formation. The four thematic areas are language and communication; nature and community; organization and politics; and mathematic language, administration and accounting. The CEFIC also has different productive projects that all the students work in.

In the talk at the CEFIC everyone shared valuable personal insight, the teachers as much as the students in their participation. The spiral in the heart of the earth is a symbol of great importance for the indigenous communities of the Andes. While we have it surrounded in the Ketchwa word "Pachakutik", the words mentioned by the students in this talk represented ideas from the Nasa students, such as “life”, “thought”, “time”, and “processes”. One student commented that "we as indigenous peoples have been most affected by the other countries who have taken the diversities from out territories as well as the government that takes decisions to organize new individual strategies like the FTA or the FTAA. These are organizations that we do not agree with, we as the indigenous peoples of Colombia." Another student at the end said that the presentation “helped raise consciousness to the indigenous youth to continue strengthening tradition in each Nasa community."

This time the visit to Pueblo Nuevo was a mere getting to know; we left with a desire to go back and continue to getting to know and sharing with the residents. Before we left the area we were able to walk around quite a bit, admire the fique crops, work cabuya (natural fiber), and learn weaving techniques from the youth. Also thanks to a compañero who practices medicine we were invited to participate in a refreshing ritual that helped us concentrate, relax and search for equilibrium. We asked to be able to give. Two main things that impacted us… one was that at all times and in all spaces, the majority of women and youth are weaving. We think of that tradition as a parallel symbol to the social processes that are practiced each day. The other was the lyrics from one of the songs from the Andean music group from Pueblo Nuevo, Wejxa Kiwe (which means the wind of the earth or clamor of the earth) that said: "latinamerican brother the borders need to be broken ".

Suramérica: anarquistas y antimilitaristas decimos NO a la guerra/ South American anarchists and anti-militarists say NO to war

* The threat of armed conflict involving the governments of Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela has mobilized anarchists and anti-militarists across the continent, in words and in action, to repudiate what would be a monstrous aggression by state powers against our peoples. Below there are two documents that call for struggle against this evil.

__Declaration of Latin American antimilitarists: We don’t need another war__

We don’t need another war. We, conscientious objectors and antimilitarists from Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela and the whole of Latin America and the Caribbean together, categorically refuse to participate in belligerent escalades that will lead to a war that, again, will attempt to divide us. We have enough with hunger, corruption, rampant militarism, the obscene military budget, insecurity, the continuous violations of human rights by our governments, for them to give us yet another armed conflict.

War will only strengthen nationalism in the countries involved, increasing the xenophobia already existing in our countries. It will empower the armed forces giving them another excuse to increase their budgets and will hide the problems that plague us even more as Latin American and Caribbean peoples: the out of control exploitation of our resources, the ever so high levels of unemployment, discrimination and gender-based violence, corruption and the mafias in power, whole communities displaced because of war or single crop agriculture, racism and class discrimination, etc. None of these can be solved by war. On the contrary, war will mean that these problems will increase just as they have in every dictatorship and in every civil war.

A war among Latin American states is also a civil war among brothers, driven to slaughter by militarist governments, either of the right or of the left. The only winners in a fratricide war are the global arms merchants who in the United States or in the Russian Federation build their laboratories of war and oppression in our countries under the euphemism of “Plan Colombia”.

We say no to war and its preparations. No to empowering the military, either of the left or of the right. Yes to people’s autonomy and their struggles. Yes to Latin American brotherhood.

We call for massive action against militarism and war, we are committed to working together for justice and solidarity, outside the barracks, in each of our countries.

Las Abejas y las Garzas / The Bees and Storks

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In these two months bees from the north, south and all directions have been in their home communities resting and sharing with those close to them. Though yet again our short phase of hibernation ends and we reanimate into our busy bee work. In Garzón, Huila the bees had a presentation quite different in relation to what we normally do, both new critters and new spaces that had not been experimented with prior. Organized by the group Amigos y Gestores-LQR, this cross pollinization of the Plan Colombia story was done in the Pentecostal Church of Colombia in the barrio el Progreso with different storks (garzas) of the community. Storks being the animal for which the town is named. Mostly religious leaders such as the; father from the Catholic Church of Ríoloro Dioceses of Garzón and various pastors from Christian churches as well as educators of the municipality, students and members of the Juventud Trabajadora Colombiana.
Nervously, because of the strong critique against the church’s role in the conquest and colonization, a bee started the story. The storks were generally active participants during the whole story. The participation was so that the encuentros lasted nearly three hours and various issues that are pertinent to region came up such as; the role of the churches in the past, their present and possible role in the future and the affects that Nestle is having on local dairy production. Also discussed was the hydroelectric dam Quimbo that is in the process of starting construction on the Río Yuma or Huacacayo (Magdalena) that will have great changes for the region.
In reference to the churches and religion, nobody argued with what is portrayed in the graphic. After the story, the father asked what role we though the church should play in social movements. Like any and all questions that are posed as “What do the bees think?”, we answered that if a community is to organize through religion, spirituality, another or neither, that is the decision of the community and nobody, especially an outsider, has the right to intervene and tell a population “how things should be done”.
It also came up that the storks need to recognize their capacity and ability to organize and gain benefits for their community and territory. We spoke about how the domestication that we have survived has us believing that only professionals or people in electoral positions are the ones that know and can, and that the people should blindly follow like sheep. It was even suggested that the same people from the marginal barrios and surrounding hillsides were completely capable of being those people that FACE off challenges to the region and that traditional representation, electoral, has never been democratic.
When we arrived at the scene of the story where we cross the Nestle mosquito many storks took the word to talk about the impacts that were being lived in the region. As one stork told, two years ago in the Central Huila it was not profitable to produce milk and because of this many dairy producers abandoned the practice for lack of necessary income. The rest continued producing cheese, yogurt and other dairy products to not completely loose what was being produced, even though these products don’t have the same value as milk and all the prices are regulated by the municipality. With hopes of improvement, with state initiative and support, local milk producers form associations aiming to better the quality and production of the milk, specifically combating Aftrosa the disease that prevents Colombian cottage industry dairy products from be exported internationally.
Because of these same dynamics the sales and products of the Colombian dairy corporation Colanta increase as does the presence and consumption of products from Swiss multinational Nestle. The government pushes the local producers to associate and receive free refrigeration tanks and be able to pasteurize milk to widen the possible market, milk becomes a business again. Because of the increase of corn based biodiesel in the United States, corn being the primary cattle feed, the international price of milk has gone up.
Nestle is now proposing to buy all production from the local associations and pushing non associated producers to associate with support and assistance from the company such as pasteurization ands refrigeration tanks. Today Nestle pays better than the milkman. This year or next, the sale of fresh milk in the streets will be made illegal, milk not certified with the seal of health of Ibima. A bottle of milk from the milkman costs $750 pesos while a bottle of pasteurized milk costs $1500 pesos, more than double. This means that a large part of the Colombian population would no longer be able to consume these food products.
At the beginning and at the end of the story telling came the question about what the bees thought about Quimbo. We spoke of the little we know, that Quimbo is a dam planned for the Río Yuma/Huacacayo (Magdalena) above where it joins with the Río Páez with a reservoir covering some 8,250 ha in the municipalities of Gigante, el Agrado, Garzón and Altamira. This would be the second dam on the river in Huila (the first, Betania, being more to the north), is a project by Spanish energy multinational, Emgesa, and the environmental impact study done by the state that supports the project, has already been approved. All the generated electricity would be to sell to Ecuador and there are stories about agricultural and tourist benefits for the region with the projects completion.
For
the most part it seems that everyone who will not be displaced from their homes is in support of the project while those who will have to leave don’t like the idea one bit. Though enough that they are organizing and trying to do something about it. The truth is that if the most affected, the most hurt by this project don’t do anything, there isn’t anything to be done. It is said that all the landowners will receive compensation for their land and that the displaced will relieve newly irrigated lands in the llanos de Altamira. Well, that’s what is said. Some of the communities and caserías that will stay below the surface are el Balseadero, la Escalereta, San José de Taperas, San José de Belén, Veracruz, Ríoloro, Yaguilga, la Cañada, los Cocos and la Honda. The geography will change. Only memories will remain of places that no longer exist.
The most certain is that the secondary effects of a mega project are not really known until all is said and done; one can have thousands of hypothesis, studies and investigations, though until its done it is all theory. The effects on the environment, culture, economy, society, politics, and history… all remain to be seen. Meanwhile we continue with a perspective that would have us believe that our development and
necessities as a species is to dominate and not coexist with our environment and we only continue steadfast upon along the same path of environmental destruction in the name of a supposed progress that will see us to our tomb.
These were some of the things discussed. These weeks of relative hibernation and reanimation in an environment out of the traditional has been a new and fresh way to start flights and cross pollinations for this year. The time with the storks and the other critter in the Upper Magdalena, especially the oilbirds (guacharos), was an experience that was unique, personal and enabling of reflections on how to break with our young urban ghetto to help widen and deepen consciousness and movements in other spaces.
Tertulia Bajo las Estrellas - Tutorial Under the Stars
Este viernes pasado fue la cierre del año con Semillas Creativas. Hormigas, Abejas y Fuerza Mestiza de Mefisto vino al cierre que incluyo unos raperos locales, un sancocho comunal, muestre de la peli “Vampiros en la Havana II”, un poco de “pisao”, una exposición de fotos tomadas por las Semillas y estampando de una variedad de imagines incluyendo unos del grafico de Plan Colombia de la Colmena y también se comenzó el mural en las paredes de afuera del local de Semillas que esta siendo creado comunalmente entre las Hormigas, Abejas y Semillas. El clima coopero con nosotros durante toda la tarde y la noche con cielos desanublados y nada de lluvia. Mientras que el evento progreso de la tarde a la noche, más y más chicxs, jóvenes y otras personas de la comunidad seguían saliendo para la peli, la sopa y el estampado. El mural no fue terminado y sigue el proceso entre todxs lxs involucradxs.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This past Friday was the closing with Semillas Creativas for the 2007 school year. Ants, Bees and Fuerza Mestiza from Mefisto came for the closing which included performances from local hip-hop artists, a communal sancocho (stew), a film showing of “Vampiros en la Havana II”, some stepping, a showing of some photos taken by the Semillas, silk screening of all sorts of images including from the Hive’s Plan Colombia graphic and finally the commencing of a mural being painted on the outside of the Semilla’s building that Mefisto is working with the Ants, Bees & Semillas for the creation of a communally made art piece. The weather cooperated with us throughout the afternoon and evening with clear skies and no rain. As the event progressed and went into the night more and more kids, youth and other folk from the community came out for the movie, the food and the silk screening. The mural was started and is currently a work in progress between all involved.
Estampando con Semillas Creativas / Silk Screening with Semillas Creativas
Aunque el año escolar esta llegando a su fin, las Abejas siguen tomando las oportunidades de platicar con diversos grupos de estudiantes y jóvenes. Esta semana volvimos a Juan Pablo II para seguir el intercambio de conocimientos e imaginación con las Semillas Creativas. Escogimos unos de los dibujos más detallados y relacionados con los gráficos y después de unas horas en photoshop, pudimos usar las imágenes y quemar las planchas para la jornada de estampado con unas 100 Semillas creativas; alumnos, profes y unas hormigas que vinieron a ayudar. Como habían más de 100 camisetas, chaquetas y otra ropa para estampar, solo se pudo estampar dos diseños. Las camisetas que lxs niñxs estamparon el lunes con la telaraña del ALCA y las hormigas de la tradición oral de Plan Colombia van hacer las camisetas que usaron el miércoles en su grado de año. Como había tantas Semillas Creativas felices, saltando, corriendo, metiéndose en todos los espacios, las abejas y hormigas se inventaron actividades para entretenerlxs mientras que otras hormigas seguían con la jornada de estampado. Primero nos tomamos la calle en la práctica de un poco del baile pisao o “step”. Era algo muy nuevo para casi todxs las Semillas, hormigas y abejas nos morimos de la risa. Después del pisao fuimos a la plazoleta y jugamos un partido de micro fútbol hasta que ya después de 6 horas de sol, fútbol, estampado y pisao termino la jornada. Todxs felices pero bien cansados. Este viernes se realizará otra jornada de estampado con las mismas imágenes más unos de la Colmena, también acompañado por una peli en la plazoleta. La idea que tienen las hormigas y abejas es seguir trabajando con las Semillas Creativas cuando regresan el año entrante y seguir con propuestas y proyectos de cómo crear una pedagogía inclusiva, interesante y mas que todo, divertida.
Even though the school year is coming to an end, the Bees still take every opportunity to converse with diverse groups of students and youth. This week we returned to the barrio Juan Pablo II to continue our exchange of skills and imagination with the Semillas Creativas. We picked some of the most detailed drawings that were influenced by the graphics and after some hours in photoshop we were able to use the images to prepare the silk screens for a silk screening session with about 100 Semillas Creativas; students, teachers and Ants that came along to help. Since there was over 100 t-shirts, jackets and other clothes to silk screen we were only able to silk screen two designs. This past Monday the kids silk screened a spider web like the one from the FTAA graphic and the oral traditional ants from the Plan Colombia graphic. On Wednesday of this week the kids used these same shirts at their graduation ceremony. Since there were so many Semillas that were happy, jumping, running and getting into every lil space they could the ants and bees came up with games and activities to keep them active while the other ants were busy away silk screening. First we took over the street and started to practice some steping. It was something new for almost everyone there and all the Semillas, ants and bees were cracking up with laughter. After the stepping we went to the plaza and had a game of micro fútbol until finally after 6 hours of sun, fútbol, silk screening and stepping we called it quits for the day. Everyone was really happy but equally if not more exhausted. This Friday will continue the silk screening with the same and many more designs including some Beehive graphics as well as a film showing in the plaza. The idea that the ants and bees have is to continue working with the Semillas Creativas when they return next year and continue with the proposals and projects of how to create a more interesting, inclusive and most importantly fun pedagogy.
Abejas y Semillas Creativas/ Bees & Semillas Creativas (Creative Seeds)
La semana pasada una Abeja fue al barrio Juan Pablo II en Ciudad Bolívar para realizar una charla con lxs jóvenes de ese barrio que estudien en la Asociación Semillas Creativas. Este barrio esta en la localidad con una reputación de ser lo mas peligroso, violento y pobre de la ciudad. No tanto ahora comparado a lo que era en una época. A principio de los 90s en la plaza del barrio los paracos masacraron como 20 jóvenes del barrio. En esa misma plaza en donde se realizo la charla y esta ubicado la asociación. Semillas Creativas trabaja con jóvenes del barrio en donde muchos vienen de situaciones difíciles como de trabajo infantil, familias desplazadas por la violencia o que están atrasados en el estudio. Semillas trabaja con lxs chicxs para ayudarlos adelantarse en el estudio y colegio. Si no fuera por la Asociación muchos de estos chicxs no tendrían una oportunidad de estudiar fuera de colegios distritales.
La charla fue algo muy especial, de las mejores charlas que ha hecho la abeja que participo. La manta se distendió en la plaza y una amontonada de peladitxs se agrupó alrededor y hasta encima de la tela. Estos eran niñxs que no han tenido el estudio o colegio que se cree "normal", pero de todas las audiencias era el grupo más participativo y consiente de los temas que se trataban; la perdida de tradición oral, lo malo de la televisión, contaminación del medio ambiente, cultivos transgénicos y los megaproyectos. Por casualidad detrás del barrio se veía la continuación de la montaña, que es parte de la localidad y urbanización de Ciudad Bolívar, en plena operación minera. Que sea para el uranio o cual quiere otro mineral de interés a las multinacionales que quieren explotar la tierra debajo de Ciudad Bolívar para poder contaminar, enfermar y destruir la salud del medio ambiente y las personas para hacer mas plata. Y abajo del barrio se veía unas lagunas llenas de agua verde brillante, aguas contaminadas y abandonadas en el medio del barrio. Estos mega proyectos urbanos entre otros en la localidad son principalmente por la multinacional Mexicana de cemento, CeMex. Si fuera Norte America, le llamarían racismo/clasismo ambiental. Mientras que la realidad de los gráficos estaba presente en el propio lugar donde estábamos, el grupo estaba tan feliz y involucrado en la interpretación de los gráficos que también se les presento la obra del ALCA.
Después de la charla entramos a la casa de Semillas todxs que participamos y nos sentamos a dibujar los aspectos de los gráficos que nos impactaron más. La mayoría de peladxs dibujaron las hormigas contando historias alrededor de la fogata, los helicópteros, la araña en su telaraña y las carabelas de Colon. Este nuevo proyecto cooperativo entre Semillas y las Abejas tendría una segunda parte donde se va crear una nueva escena de los varios dibujos que hicieron los niñxs para quemar las en una plancha y poder estampar su ropa con su propio diseño. Este proyecto se piensa como un nuevo método de trabajar con grupos de niñxs y poder dejarles una parte del imagen para tener después de contar el cuento además de darles una copia del afiche para seguir usando.
Last week a Bee went to the barrio Juan Pablo II in Ciudad Bolívar to do a story telling with the youth of the barrio that study with the Association Semillas Creativas. This barrio is in the locality that has the reputation for being the most dangerous, violent and poor of the city. While relattively calmer now, not to long ago this reputation was very well deserved. In the early 90s the paramilitaries massacred about 20 youth from the barrio in the plaza, the same plaza where the story telling was done and where Semillas is located. The Association works with a lot of youth from the barrio that come from difficult situations like working in the streets, from families displaced by violence or are behind in their studies. Semillas works with the kids to help them catch up or get ahead in their schooling. If it were not for the Association many of these kids would not have the opportunity to be able to study outside of the schools.
The story telling was something special and one of the best talks that the bee participating that day did. The banner was unfolded in the plaza and a whole bunch of lil ones piled around and eventually onto the cloth. These are kids who have not had the study or schooling that would normally be considered necessary, though of all the groups this one was by far the most participative and conscious of the issues being discussed; the loss of oral tradition, the negativity of the television, pollution and the environment, genetically modified foods and mega development projects. And it just so happened that behind the barrio continuing onto the mountain, that is part of the locality and urbanization of Ciudad Bolívar, there was a full out mining operation. Whether it is for the uranium or any other mineral that is of interest to multi national corporations, they want to exploit the land under Ciudad Bolívar to pollute, sicken and destroy the health of the environment and the people to make profits. Below the barrio you could see some ponds filled with bright green water, water that is contaminated and abandoned in the middle of the barrio. These urban mega projects and many others are the work of Mexican cement company, CeMex. If it were North America, it would be called environmental racism/classism. While the very reality of the graphics was in existence in the space where we were, the group was so excited and busy interpreting the graphics that the FTAA story telling was also done.
After the story telling we all went into the group´s building and sat down to draw the images that we saw that most impacted us. Most of the kids drew images like the story telling ants around the campfire, the helicopters, the spider in its web and Columbus ships. This collaborative project between Semillas and the Bees will have a second part a new scene will be created from parts of the drawings that the children made and turned into a silk screen design so that the kids can silk screen their clothes with their own designs. This project is being thought of as a new method to work with youth and be able to leave them a part of the image to keep after the story telling in addition to the copy of the poster they keep to continue using.
