Caracas

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After a short time of rest in the Caribbean beaches and forests, the bees take flight once again landing in the city of Caracas. Once again, we are in the hussle and bussle of the city that is a bit exhausting for us, though with the help of a trio of critters, a sloth, a tamandua and a spectacled bear as well as other animals from the city, we have adapted quickly to continue or labor of sharing and exchanging experiences and knowledge with the animals of the urban jungle.

The first story telling was in the Centro de Estudios Sociales Libertarios with the ants that maintain a library open to all sorts of animals that arrive from the barrio, city and other places. The part from the Plan Colombia graphic that spurred a lot of discussion was the scene of the classroom in the School of the Americas. Ants mentioned that there are various Venezuelan military and politicians that have received training in the infamous tactics of the Schools of Assassins. Many of these have been connected to horrendous violations of human rights since before and some even after the coming into power of President Chavez in the last 10 years. One example of these is the current Minister of Popular Power for Interior Relations and Justice Ramón Rodríguez Chacín, who in the 1980s was an official of the CEJAP (Comando Específico José Antonio Páez), involved in the Massacre of Amparo, in which 9 ants were assassinated in the state of Yaracuy. In defense the soldiers involved claimed that the massacre was against a guerrilla insurgent group. This event was learned about because four of the victims, that were social justice activists of the “Corriente Histórico Social”, survived and even though they have denounced these acts, the incident and its actors remain in impunity and in their positions of power within the State.

In another showing of the Plan Colombia graphic that was in the school of Environmental Management at the Universidad Bolivariana de Venezuela, other ant and bird students shared experiences in relation to the graphic but from the Venezuelan context. One of the students who came from the nearby coastal city of the Guaira, mentioned how the petrodollar$ have funded many projects but also have left many necessities without attention. This community only receives water two days a week which is a reality that is shared by many barrios in Caracas. On the other hand the automobile industry that consumes massive quantities of water never has water shortages, something quite distinct than what occurs for a large part of the populace. Another ant mentioned that in the community of Las Claritas in the state of Bolívar, the private security of the mining company Crystallex operates in the region as if they were the police or army though in protecting the interests of the corporation. As has been seen in other places like Colombia and Iraq, companies now come with their own armies of mercenaries in charge of only taking care of their interests.

The last talk we were able to realize in Caracas was in Parque del Este with the anarkopunk birds that take refuge in this green space as a place of rest from the concrete jungle. In this story telling the bees and birds reflected and questioned… how is it there is a revolutionary process that continues functioning, partnered and in business with petroleum companies like BP, Repsol and CheveronTexaco as well as other corporations like Nestlé, and Pepsi, that is locally owned by Polar? How can it be said that this process is in solidarity with other social movements in Latin America when all of these companies are stained in decades of blood shed and repression that continues on today? What good are projects like the Mercal in terms of public health when all of the food comes from genetically modified crops from Brazil? Venezuela may have banned the cultivation of gmos, but it still does consume them. What benefits are there to all the social projects if everything is based upon a savage exploitation of the environment and a supposed development that is being implemented by means of the industrialization of the territory in form of destructive mega projects part of the IIRSA and Plan Puebla Panama? We bees observe that the small band-aids that are trying to be used to remedy the deep social inequalities are being done by methods that are increasing the central factors that are causing the earth’s climate change which is taking us down a path of global destruction without return.

Our time in Caracas was entirely too short and we recognize that we were not able to get to know and share with more of the barrios where the organization, struggle and resistance is truly revolutionary. All of this and much more remains to be explored upon a future return.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some of us bees have landed on the lands of the Universidad Nacional (UNAL) where the ants are in permanent assembly and an indefinite abnormality until the directors decide to negotiate with dignity regarding the reforms that have been occurring. In the end, the ants started arriving in appreciation of the Plan Colombia graphic and the library ants came out and participated in a story telling that was almost three hours long. Though we had all the time we need because, we are on strike!

All of the ants and bees saw for ourselves how in accord with military spending that is only good for transnational companies and while the money is spent on helicopters, arms, military training, oil pipelines and infrastructure for a certain type of development model, education is left on the side and is not considered an important factor in terms of investment. Instead it is seen as a unnecessary expense and that those who govern say that: -anyways we are only educating rebellious ants-; for instance the situation of the Universidad Pedagógica that is nearly bankrupt and the UNAL does not exactly have the best funds to development it self autonomously either, ah! Though be assure that the bureaucratic mafias continue functioning, the high administration keeps their money and what a good business the Universities have become!

When we arrived at the scene where the mosquitoes are stealing the genetic information from the trees, plants and the rural areas to turn it into private property (copyright material) we started to reflect how the University is really not that autonomous the way many of us want it to be.
For example, the Instituto de Biotecnología (IBUN) develops investigation regarding genetically modified seeds such as rubber (financed by the company Mavalle S.A) and in the production of biofertilizers related to Bt, the extraction of ethanol from oil palm. All of this from the investigation group of “Bioprocesos” that has been functioning since the 1980s amongst other groups in existance such as “Bipesticidas”, “Bionegocios”, “Bioinformática” and others financed by corporations that want the rural areas to plant food crops for the consumption of machines and not people. So the Public University has become a place of investigation at the service of transnational companies which is connected to how the University is financed by these since low funds it receives from the State don’t cover costs. So the University looks for private finance and we ask ourselves, for who is it that we are studying? Who is benefiting from our investigations? Another example is that many Engineering students realize their investigations, undergraduate and graduate, for companies like Mazda. Again we ask ourselves, what is the model of University that we want?

Currently the university is in a Permanent Assembly and in Academic Abnormality, because Management (an elite like any other elite that only cares about their interests and visions) sent by the Casa de Nariño wants to impose an efficient and effective University, make it business like. On April 15th the Estatuto Estudiantil (acuerdo 008) is approved, guiding the vision and mission for the university’s reforms. One of its academic reforms is that students must finish their studies as quickly as possible, giving students a bag of credits and change our mind frame into how many credits we have to study. In other words, how much does a student have to waste (logical cost/benefit=business) and does not support the insect students who say: I want to study and take advantage of the University’s academic diversity. On the other hand they also want to enact a statute of order and conviviality that strengthens a model of (democratic) security, repressing the student and rebellious expressions or any other activity that interferes with the normal academic process (normal being classes in classrooms, set learning hours, professors who believe they have the ultimate knowledge and authority, in other words traditional education) is subject to expulsion! In addition a new security model is trying to be implanted by opening up the university to the city, taking away the gates and put in more then 500 security cameras, allow full police access as well as stronger spatial and territorial control. There are plans to also turn the university into a shopping complex with a food plaza and elevated pedestrian shopping center walkways that connect the Transmilenio of the Kra 30 with the station on the calle 26. In the end it appears that the management only wants a model of a student that is obedient, quiet, respectful of the (unjust) laws of this country, uncritical and that never thinks or acts for them self. It is a student obedient to the market, corporations and the State. The model of a business University?

In agreement with this development model for corporations and machines and not for people, we spoke about how companies like Nestle are behind the privatization of our rural areas when they buy coffee at low prices and impose only one kind of variety making farmer dependent, also that more land is being distributed to cattle then to peasants.
Accommodating a market controlled by large wealthy landowners, companies and yes the paramilitary dung beetles. Coca-Cola also came up and how it is imposing models for the privatization of water with its front companies like Manantial that steals water from la Calera and Chingaza that is for the people in Bogotá. Other companies too like Agua Cristal that is in the macizo colombiano appropriating the water of the indigenous and peasant communities.

In reference to this we spoke with the university ants that it is important we also plant, not only ideas but also plants and trees as is the case of the university gardens (today there are 6: “La Manuelita” in agronomy, “Maloka” or “EEE” in humanities, “Girasoles” between law and medicine, by biology, by economics, and lastly architecture!) where a variety of insect students have planted corn, beans, arracacha, carrots, more corn, quinoa, spinach, collards, potatoes, tobacco, sunflowers, lulo and well a lot more corn and other plants. Also different trees have been planted as part of a reappropriation and reforestation campaign of the University’s green spaces.
We made the invitation that we don’t speak of territory in the university though that we create territory in our daily activities in our university. The farmers shared that now twice they have had to denounce that security has been sent to destroy the set up for a seed bank that the ants and other insects had constructed. They have sabotaged it twice in one month and in “La Manuelita” have uprooted some corn!… who is it that is so bothered by life and one who plants some plants instead of war? In the end, the insect students told us that if “they knock them over again; we will just plant more gardens.”

Many liked the spiral of time and the contrast between the nightmare and the ants’ resistance. There was a lot of laughter, especially when we spoke of popular festivities in where the chicha, guarapo, and the chirrincho are shared instead of drinking so much beer.
These insect students sure do love their fiestas, music and happiness! We concluded and reflected that the model of the university that we insects want will not serve the multinationals such as what is already occurring. Our investigations and reflections, our own proposals, should help strengthen processes not only of the student movement though also outside of the university, towards a populace that is so diverse, so campesino, so indigenous, so afro, so roma (“gypsy”), so barrio, so simple …what we are saying is a university for the people, for all of the people!. The changes need to start to be realized from in our classrooms, discussion spaces, assemblies, garden plantings and in the fiestas, where we sing our songs of rebellion and autonomy.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

During the last week the bees continue polonizing and getting to know more or the urban landscape of Cali. On these flights, the Cali Campus of the Universidad de Valle has been a space where we have shared with students, educators and workers about our work and the Plan Colombia graphic in the hallways, auditoriums and classrooms. In the different discussions and spaces that opened up for this free exchange of knowledge and experiences various issues were discussed relating to particular issues in the region.

Once again the CIAT was mentioned with more of the problems associated with their genetic manipulation of traditional food crops to create genetically modified organisms locally. It was mentioned how in Valle there are various programs sponsored by the CIAT such as CLAYUCA. The Latin American & Caribbean Consortium for the Investigation and Development of Yuca (Cassava) is financed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development Consortium is a project that the CIAT primarily started and supports whose objective is the propagation of cassava clones for the production of bioethanol instead of food. Just this past week the CIAT had a Workshop in Cali about Cassava harvest with a focus on their clones.

In Buga, a city not far from Cali, there is a packaging and distribution plant for Nestle products that has a history in the region. Threatened and assassinated union workers, the selling of expired milk and the contamination of the río Bugalagrande and the río Cauca among others. Here all the problems that Nestle has had on a global scale are evident on the regional level.

Yesterday around midday after the last workshop this time around in Cali, the other talks were canceled at UniValle because of disturbances.
Around noon after about half an hour that some students had blockaded the entrance of the university with buses, the ESMAD (Colombian riot police) and the police violated university autonomy entering the campus herding and attacking students, most who had nothing to do with the disturbances.Entering from the paso ancho entrance and going as far as the Departments of Engineering and Sciences there was a lot of police brutality towards the students, destruction of students’ and university property as well as the detention of 4 students who are still being detained and are in danger of being sentenced many years when they had nothing to do with the disturbances.

Eventually the students liberated two tanks that got as far as the sports fields until the robocops came to reclaim them. After the tanks left the students formed a human wall and literally forced the ESMAD to retreat from campus walking backwards and humiliated. By no means was it pacifist but non violent was the human chain that formed a bumper between the expulsion of the monsters and the huge mass of students who were outraged into liberating their university. The news on Caracol and RCN spoke mostly of the buses that had been stolen and another burnt vehicle as well as the police and the military nearly fighting over who had the “right” to enter the campus. After the police entered the university and before they were expelled, the commander of the police did a television interview affirming that the university had been calmed down and that the “terrorists” had been captured. Even thought the department’s Governor does not care about what has been done and shows tendencies parallel in the authoritarianism of the leader of the State, his orders, like those of past governors, for the police to attack and enter the university is illegal and in the past, has resulted in various cases of students being assassinated in impunity by the police or the military.
